Brand John Galliano
The famous British designer John Galliano is often called the king of glamor and outrageous: he is the creator of exquisite, breathtaking outfits for the most famous women in the world!
His real name is Juan Carlos Antonio. He was born in 1960 in Gibraltar in an international family: his mother is Spanish, his father is English. When he was six years old, the family moved to London. Since childhood, fond of painting, John Galliano entered the prestigious College of Art and Design of St. Martin. In college, he changed his name to John.
The beginning of a creative biography
John combined college with work: the plumber’s family did not live richly. He got a job as a dresser at the National Theater, becoming an assistant to the famous tailor Tommy Nutter, who made costumes for The Beatles and Sir Elton John. Nutter had a lot to learn: he did not recognize the canons, creating horizontal striped trousers and jackets with wide lapels.
Galliano’s thesis was called “The Incredible” – that was the name of the young people who, after the French Revolution, made changes to their costume. In his collection there were options for “unisex” clothing worn upside down and upside down, dresses cut “obliquely”, massive “army boots”, amazing hats. The models were bought by the Browns avant-garde boutique, which was a great success. One of the vests from the collection was purchased by Diane Ross, thanks to which orders for them fell like a cornucopia. A young designer bought fabrics and sewed vests for sale at home.
He presented his first spring-summer -1985 collection at London’s ready-to-wear fashion week. Its name is “Afghanistan rejects Western ideals.” This was followed by collections with no less interesting names: “Absurd Games”, “Fallen Angels”, “Forgotten Innocence”. John Galliano liked to come up with stories for the characters of which he created costumes. His collections could be controversial, sometimes too costumed, but they were never boring. He turned every model show into an interesting theatrical performance, creating a festive atmosphere.

Despite success, his models sold out poorly: John lived in poverty. At the age of 30, he arrived in Paris without a shilling in his pocket. At first he slept on the floor in a friend’s apartment and worked in a corner of one of the factory workshops, also provided by friends. However, he believed in success and worked hard.
His collection “Flight of Princess Lucretia from Bolshevik Russia” was inspired by the hype around the name of Princess Anastasia, daughter of Nicholas II, who allegedly fled to the West. To create a charming image of Princess Lucretia, the designer looked at a lot of movies and photographs of representatives of the high society of Russia, before starting to work on costumes. His collection consisted of luxurious ball gowns, transparent blouses and skirts, quilted satin wraps, in which the heroine could be dressed. The success was amazing, and luck was not long in the person of Anna Wintour, editor of the American branch of Vogue magazine. She took up his promotion: found sponsors, sent the collection and designer to New York to meet influential clients, then the new collection was shown at the Paris Fashion Week 1996.

For this show, the friend’s friend Anna Wintour’s mansion was shot for one day, the floor of which was decided to be strewn with dry leaves and love letters, which the designer composed with friends all night. As invitation cards, we used old keys bought at a flea market in the amount of five hundred pieces and sent out to guests. Dry ice completed the romantic picture. Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss participated in the show without payment, provided that they receive a gift of a dress of “ingenious couturier”. Funds for creating the collection were not enough, so John found an original way out: he created models from lining atlas using both sides of the material. The main color of the models was black, only at the beginning and at the end of the show there were two bright spots – pink dresses. This show made a splash in fashion. “We all understood that we had witnessed the birth of a miracle. All the clothes were sophisticated, simple and very feminine. I wanted to wear every dress immediately! ” – Diana von Furstenberg subsequently recalled.

After the show, Bernard Arnault – the owner of the LVMH holding, invited John Galliano to head the Givènes House. To do this, I had to remove the very founder of the House – Hubert Givenshi. Not everyone liked this appointment, Pierre Berger, Director General of Yves Sauint Laurent House, was indignant: “Shpana in a noble House!”
